On "Average Size" Sharpening Orders

If your sending equipment to us please read everything on this page

Here is the address to ship when using the US Post Office, DHL, UPS or FedEx: The "Inventory Sheet" (below) will automatically print this address out for you on a seperate sheet, then you just attach it to your box.

Northern Tails Sharpening
c/o The UPS Store
1956-J University Blvd. S.
Suite# 333
Mobile, AL 36609
251-232-5353
fax 251-661-7808

This is a new address in Mobile. They are tearing down the mall where the old UPS Store is located to build a CVS Pharmacy. The "Old Shell Road" address will still be good until September 2009.

.
Priority shipping through the USPS takes two days no matter where we both live, it will not get there any faster if you live closer. Boxes mailed to me within Alabama still took two days to reach me. I have boxes coming from all states in the lower 48 and they all take two days to get to me. The USPS is no longer moving mail from city to city on Saturday and Sunday.  This could mean an extra day or two in the shipping process.

.
How Your Equipment is Sharpened

Blades are disassembled, cleaned, and hollow ground. Springs, glides, and sockets are adjusted or replaced (if necessary) at no extra charge1. Blades are then cleaned again in blade wash containing a Disinfectant and RUST INHIBITOR, lubricated and reassembled to precise factory tension and proper cutter setback. Each blade is string tested like the factory does it before it is returned to you.

Each shear is initially inspected; edges are re-sharpened to produce smooth, sharp scissoring; tension adjusted; bump stoppers, screws & washers replaced as needed at no extra charge1; then the shear is cleaned & lubricated, with final inspection and testing done on actual hair. As an active groomer, I set up shears for my hand making the emphasis on the tips. Usually the tension is OK for everyone by doing it this way. Corrugation is done by request at no charge, but it can take some of the cutting ability away from the blade its put on. Corrigation can also make the shear start a "swishing" sound when opening and closing.

There are two movies on the "Instructional Video" page that shows how blades are reassembled and adjusted, and another describing how shears are set-up and adjusted after sharpening.
1. This is within reason. If your sending equipment that all have parts missing or broken you will be charged.

Print out the "Inventory Sheet" (below) and send it with your order.

Fax it to us if you need more security for your credit card info.

Use this Inventory Sheet to itemize whats in your shipping box. It will give you an estimate of what your sharpening will cost.
Document
An Inventory sheet and questionaire to use for your equipment. Print this out and itemize your shipment. This will print out a label for your box already addressed to Northern Tails, tape it on.
It also has a place to tell me about your concerns and special requests. It even has the label for the box already addressed for you.

Please make sure I have an "After Hours" phone number that you will answer ( evenings & weekends ), incase something is wrong and I need to contact you !

If you do alot of cats with #10's or 7F's please designate these blades for me. Its best to set the tension of these blades at the high end of the tension spec. If not, they may have trouble cutting and just snag or drag in some of these cats with dense fur. Make sure your clipper is 100% as well, worn parts on it will cause blades to fail in some types of cat fur.

Please, If we talked about something on the phone make sure you write a note, or write on the Inventory Sheet about it and put it in the box. Most likely I never took a note on it and have to rely on memory. I talk to many groomers every day, and its easier for you to remember it.

Clipper Repair

Most maintenance work is for price of parts only.
There is a difference between maintenance and repair on clippers.
(Please call with any question, one pair of clippers per order)
We do not service the Oster Power Pro cordless clipper
Coupons for free service on clippers is good on only one clipper, don't send a box full.

( note: $500 worth of return insurance is the limit because I use the USPS website for postage.)
*** I don't sharpen any blade that you tried to sharpen on a "Handi-Hone" or anything else, it could damage my plate.
Have a safe and blessed day!

PLEASE READ THIS

Make sure you secure the top of your blade box with either tape or rubber bands to hold the lid down. During shipment, the lid works its way up and blades come out of the slots and slide around the inside of the box against other blades.  Blade teeth could get broken during shipment.

We Accept These Credit Cards
No International Checks
No Debit Cards

Payment is appreciated along with your order

Best Payment Method

Send your credit card information so I can keep it on file.

** You can write it on the "Inventry Sheet" or another piece of paper
** You can call me with the card number before shipping.
** Or I can call you for it before I ship back to you.

Most send it right along with the equipment. This makes things easy for future shipments, just enclose a note saying "Please charge to my card thats on file"
Please include the last three numbers on the backside of the card, sometimes I need them to run the numbers. Sometimes it may take a week or two to run your card because of my workload.

"Charge Cards" or "Check Cards" Only
                               No Debit Cards

2nd Payment Method

Send a check along with your equipment.

Make it out to "Northern Tails Sharpening". Please leave the amount blank. No one can cash a check made out this way because it has to be deposited in the same business account,  so it is secure this way. I've never lost a check in 15+ years.
I prefer the check not totaled because the final bill may change from the estimate on the inventory sheet. I sharpen stuff for free most times, and Im always looking for ways to ship back for less money. I'm always trying to find ways to save you money, but if an unexpected charge arises I'll call you to get approval before going forward with the work. Your invoice will reflect the final total of your bill and the amount on the check and check number. I'm a very honest Christian man and I'm trusted by groomers everywhere!!

An example of the way your check should be filled out for security reasons if you want to send one along that way is below.

If you have any questions about payment please call before shipping

Some Truthfull Information About Mailing Equipment Out
If your mailing out your stuff for the first time, this section will answer most of the questions you may be thinking about. Please read all of the bullet points to learn what we've learn over the years.

  • Your contact and return shipping information must be inside the box, either on a piece of paper, a business card, or the "Inventory Sheet" filled out.
  • AVERAGE SIZE ORDER: Consists of up to 18 blades, any number of shears, and one electric clipper. If your order is larger than this it may take an extra day.
  • If we talked on the phone about something special prior to your shipment, please write it down on paper and stick it in the box to remind me. I'll ask you to do that anyway because I talk to so many people and its usually while I'm driving down the road. I appreciate it!!
  • Its your responsibility to check your blades over before shipping them to me for sharpening.  If the blade has a freshly broken tooth (possibly from shipping) I will call you. I check this by looking at the break, if its a light grey color its a fresh break, if its rusty its an old break. If the blade has one old broken tooth on the very outside of the blade I will sharpen it without calling because Im assuming this blade has been in service and want me to sharpen it. New broken teeth I will always call you. Cutter teeth cannot be fixed and the cutter will need replaced. I will never sharpen a blade that has several teeth in a row missing to expose the cutter that might cut a dog, I will call you. Check those 40's over good! Broken teeth cannot be fixed. If you have blades with broken teeth that you use under combs, please write a note saying to sharpen it to save confusion. I double check everything so don't worry if you miss something.
  • Take the time and pack your box securely. Use a "blade box" to hold your blades or wrap them up in paper or bubble wrap. Your box will be tossed around during shipment alot so after you pack it shake it to see if anything rattles. If you hear something moving, re-pack it more tightly with paper, peanuts, or bubble wrap.
  • Remember, there are 20 people handling your box after you mail it, and there is also 20 people handling it after I mail it back to you. They throw boxes most times and this can jam the contents no matter how good you or I pack it. Sometimes blade teeth get busted off, scissors get bent and don't cut, and clipper bodies can get cracked up just from the jarring. The funny part is the box may show little or no damage at all. I get boxes in sometimes where items are busted or bent and it wasn't that way when it was packed, and the box may have a slight indentation on the corner. I sometimes photograph box contents when high dollar equipment is mailed out just in case it ends up damaged on the customer end, this helps insurance claims. So don't get mad, call me immediately like I suggest on the invoice so we can get some answers. Never assume I did this to your equipment, I'm a professional and call when things show up damaged or I damage them.
  • We do not automatically add insurance to any shipment, nor automatically ship back to you the same way you shipped to us. If you want insurance for the return of your stuff, put this in writing inside the box or on the "Inventory Sheet". I can only add up to $500 worth of insurance because I get postage online only. Northern Tails Sharpening will not be responsible for damage to your equipment AFTER it has been given to the US Post Office for shipment. We will not repair or replace any equipment damaged in shipment regardless. Ask for the insurance.
  • Insurance Claims - You are required to file an insurance claim for your damaged equipment, NTS cannot do this for you. If you requested insurance, we can give you the tracking numbers to do so. For online help go to the help page for insurance claims on the US Post Office website. Online Insurance Claims  Download and fill out USPS Form 1000
  • YOU PAY RETURN SHIPPING. Our prices are lower than many other services so you are spending less even when you pay the postage. We ship Priority Mail / Delivery Confirmation through the US Postal Service exclusively. Priority Mail takes 2 - 3 days to get anywhere in the lower 48 states, and I've never lost a box through the USPS. Delivery Confirmation (cost: 65 cents), will tell us when the box was shipped and where it was delivered. When the box is undeliverable, we know where its at and I will get it back in some circumstances. You can't lose using the US Post Office.
  • It is appreciated if you can try to clean the hair out of your blades. It carries parasites and who knows what other viruses and fungus spores. I have opened a box and had fleas jump all over me, Id like the fleas to remain at your place. If you don't want to clean the hair out I guess Ill just have to do it, it just slows me down. Some trimmer blades will retain hair in the springs and felt pads, no one can get this out because its part of the blade now. I understand this.
  • If you don't have time to go to the Post Office, and you want to mail your stuff to me, try "Click & Ship" from the USPS. If you have internet access, the USPS website will let you get postage online. Then take your box to the shop and let the mail carrier pick it up there. I explain this service in detail at the bottom of this page. Check it out if your swamped most days and can't get away to go to the Post Office.
  • Please don't send any postage stamps to cover the return postage, I buy postage and labels electronically from the US Post Office.
  • The 48 hour turnaround starts when I pick up the box from the UPS store. This means I will have it only 48 hours before I mail it back to you, and it does not include the shipping times both ways. Expect from the time you mail your box until you get it back to take 7 - 10 days depending if a weekend was in there someplace. Mail usually leaves the post office the day after you take it there. The Post Office does not move mail from city to city on weekends anymore since February 2009.
  • Don't "overnight" a box to me because your desperate or forgot to send it earlier, and expect me to sharpen everything in an hour and "overnight" it back to you. I'm on a mobile route a couple days a week, so Im not good at doing "overnight".
  • During the months of November, December, January, and February, there is more mail going to and from the war zone. More boxes are scanned searching for bad things during these months so a slight delay may occur in the travel times to me or back to you. We all have to be sympathetic during these periods.
  • The "Inventory Sheet" (downloadable) lists items and prices so you can itemize your shipment, and get an idea of the cost. It will even print out a label for the shipping box. Please don't fill out a check for the amount of the itemized inventory sheet, because you'll forget to include your return postage.
  • The Post Office is not working weekends anymore except for the sales counter. No mail is moving city to city anymore over the weekends. If a box is mailed on Friday chances are it will not leave that Post Office until Monday at 6am.  UPS, FEDEX, or DHL will move your box over the weekend for about $50 more than regular postage. You have to make the decision "Is it worth it"? The US Post Office is still the best way to ship boxes because they guarantee 2 day delivery on Priority Mail to any lower 48 state from any state. Yes, that means Miami FL to Seattle WA in two days. Distance means nothing anymore when mailing out sharpening, it takes the same amount of time no matter where you live. (Miami FL to Seattle WA has the longest distance between two US cities in the lower 48 states)
  • I know I went over alot here, Im sorry, but I wanted to be thorough about everything. How many times did you assume something and it didn't turn out that way? Not with me, I want first time shippers, as well as seasoned shippers to know what the facts are and not guess or worry about anything. Sharpening is a team effort, lets do it right the first time!!

Flat Rate Boxes

These are free from the Post Office. You would want to use the big one as it will hold more things. The cost for postage is "One Rate" to anywhere in the US regardless of how much it weighs. If you have alot of stuff, or your shipping a long way, this is the best deal. If you have a small amout of stuff just use a regular box. Get the box that measures 8 X 11 X 6, its free at the post office. A picture of one is at the left. There is also a "Large Flate Rate Box" that holds 50% more than this box, the flate rate for this box is a few dollars more.

$3.00 each

The safest way to ship your blades!!

Best Boxes in the Business!!

The Blade Box

These two boxes will hold up to 25 blades
when you put more than one in a slot. They will save your blades from having broken teeth during shipment, and organizes them while its in the grooming shop. If you want to ship scissors as well, get a bigger box that will hold the blade box with some extra room. Wrap your shears real good with bubble wrap and put them in the bigger box along with the blade box. Make sure you put a rubber band around the blade box to hold it shut because it will come open.

We charge $3.00 for either box and they are the best on the market and it will hold together for quite a long time. We can return your blades in the box, just tell us you need one.  The larger box (pictured on right, is one inch wider), can accomodate any blade out there especially the WIDE blades.  Just $3.00 !!

VCR Tape Box (1096-L)
Padded Envelope - DO NOT USE
DO NOT USE PADDED ENVELOPES

They will break open when going through the machinery at the Post Office. If they break, the Post Office will not forward them further.
An alternative to using a padded envelope is the "VCR Tape Box" from the Post Office. Its free and measures 9 x 6 x 2 and is free for the asking. (Box# 1096-L)

This is how your box should look after you pack it up. The blades are secure in some sort of blade box, blade boxes are better than wrapping them because it keeps them from floating around in the shipping box. The clipper is wrapped in bubble wrap and tucked to the side with the cord wrapped up and placed next to the blade box. Shears are wrapped in bubble wrap and scured with rubber bands, they are placed on top of everything else. Next, fill in all the empty spaces with peanuts or newspaper so nothing moves around during the shipment. Shake your box after closing it up to make sure you dont hear anything moving around.

Do You Feel That You Don't Have Time To Run To The Post
Office And Mail Out Your Sharpening?

The U.S. Post Office offers the answer for groomers and vets who just can't take time out of their busy day to run to the Post Office.

"CLICK & SHIP"
is the answer and it's done right from the convenience of your home or shop computer. I use this service exclusively because I don't have the extra time either. All you need is a computer with internet, a printer, a credit card, and a way to get the approximated weight of your package.

To start, go to
www.usps.com and up at the top click on "Print A Shipping Label". At the next screen go to the box that says " Register Now" and click on the "Sign Up" icon. You'll be setting up an account with the US Post Office to get postage for your box. Once this is established most of the work is done.

The Post Office has free boxes to ship your equipment in, all you have to do is go there one time and ask for them (get a bunch). You'll also need some "Confirmation Delivery" stickers because we should never ship anything without it. They are usually in the lobby stacked in a display, or you can get them by the bundle right on the USPS website delivered to your location for FREE! They have an assortment of boxes but the main ones we use are the #04 box, and the Flat Rate boxes.

PROCEDURE

In one of your free Post Office boxes (or another box of your choice), pack your stuff good. Use a "Blade Box" for your blades if you have one, and wrap your shears up good. Put your information on a piece of paper (or my Inventory Sheet), and make sure you put this inside the box. Fill in the spaces of the box around your equipment with paper or foam peanuts, then seal it up with good packing tape.

Next get the weight of the box, this can be done two ways. If you have a good postal scale, or another scale that reads the weight when you place your package on it thats great! If you don't have one you can use a bathroom scale. Stand on the scale holding the box and see what the weight is. Then set the box down and get that weight. The difference in the weights is the weight of your box. Take this weight and enter it in the place provided in the Click & Ship label section.
Note: If your using a "Flat-Rate" box just enter 5 pounds for the weight, this way you don't have to weight anything. The postage for Flat-Rate boxes is the same whether your box weighs 5 pounds or 55 pounds. If you have 2 or 3 pounds of weight and you live 1000 miles from Mobile AL, the flat rate box is the way to go.

You can add Insurance and Confirmation Delivery right here as well. The website is very easy to use and you shouldn't have any problems at all so don't be scared. The whole process is two screens and I have many groomers using "Click & Ship" now because of the no hassles. There's also a tutorial or call me if you need to.

Once you've paid your postage on-line and printed off your label, attach it to your box with clear tape so they can scan through it. You can get "peel & stick" labels but plain paper works just as good. When your Postal Carrier comes to your home or shop they will pick it up right there. Your Done!!  You've mailed out your sharpening and you haven't wasted your time taking it anyplace. Don't feel bad about giving the Postal Carrier a box, they have a small vehicle parked within a half black and will take the box to it immediately.

THE 2ND TIME YOU USE "CLICK & SHIP" PROCEDURE

You only have to register and set up your account one time. The next time you want to ship a box to me, its simple. Go to www.usps.com and click on "print a shipping label". Sign in with your user name and password, and when the label entry page comes up click on on "Address Book". My address will already be in there so select it and click on "Submit". This will populate the address label entirely and all you have to do is enter the weight of the box and print out the label with the postage already on it like before. Its a two minute job now, and if you have a supply of FREE boxes from the Post Office you'll never go there again to mail a box!!!!!

If you have time to go to the Post Office thats great, if not you can use "Click & Ship" from the convenience of your home or shop. The Post Office is the fastest way to ship equipment to me unless you spend $50 with another carrier for overnight. The most it will cost for 2 day Priority Mail delivery to anywhere in the United States is $8.95 (insurance is an additional charge). In my experience, the Post office has never lost a box or damaged one in the Priority Mail service. Never ship packages First Class or Parcel Post.
